First impressions are everything

Everyone cares about first impressions. Whether it’s the front door with stained glass – or the kitchen. Kitchen cabinet doors are important. It is the face of the kitchen - they create the first visual impact. So it’s important to get it right first time.

When Quality Counts

Given that the costs of a kitchen refurbishment quickly add up, you’ll no doubt want to make sure it has lasting appeal. As well as making the right choice when it comes to materials, you’ll need to select a furniture style with real sticking power.

‘Eclectic’ is the new buzzword in interior design. It essentially means ‘anything goes’ and follows the idea that our rooms shouldn’t necessarily follow a formula, with everything matching.

If you’re keen to introduce clean lines and a minimalist look, shaker cabinets can be ideal. However, traditional timber cabinets with their elaborate details are as popular as ever. These units can complement both classic and country-inspired kitchens.

Are all kitchens the same?

No, they are not. Some kitchen doors are more durable, look better, and last longer. True, in terms of functional operation they all do the same job. But it is not that simple. Let's consider two things:- appearance and durability.

The choice of style is a personal one - we choose what we like best. So, almost any material or finish can work in any kitchen style. There are two choices: Traditional versus Contemporary.

The most popular traditional kitchen cupboard doors is 'Shaker' doors, made up of simple rectangular sections. Other traditional kitchen doors have more complicated, curved mouldings. Solid hardwood is the most common choice for traditional kitchens.

Contemporary kitchen cupboard doors are mostly flat planes of colour in a gloss or matt finish. Modern doors can be made from a wide range of materials, including wood, laminate, stainless steel, thermofoil, melamine, lacquer and acrylic. High gloss has become hugely popular but some are prone to finger-printing. The more complicated modern designs include glass panels, interior lighting, and tambour-style roller doors.

Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and despite purple being this season's hottest kitchen colour, neutrals often stand the test of time more than bold colours which, incidentally, rarely work in small kitchens. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Other alternatives for colour enthusiasts include a few braver-toned cabinets in larger kitchens or even buying cabinets that are painted on-site.
